HRC-U will be happening on Thursday at the Four Seasons Hotel. This is not a membership or fundraising event of any type, simply a “free and open” opportunity for attendees to learn more about HRC and how HRC is at work for the LGBT community nationally and locally.

LezzDance will be Saturday at Rusty’s beginning at 6pm. This popular monthly event will be giving a portion of the proceeds to Family Eldercare in care of the Bettie Naylor Fund.

Viva Streets Austin will be happening on Sunday from 10am – 3pm.  Sixth Street-from Brazos to Robert Martinez will be car-free.

LOL is happening Thursday! We’ll be gathering at Luther’s on N. Main beginning at 6:30pm. A complimentary appetizer buffet, drink specials, and dance music. A Fun Evening For All!

Equality Texas – 6th Annual Spirit of Texas Brunch  will be Sunday, May 20th, 10:30 – 1:30pm, at the Pearl Stable, 307 Pearl Parkway. The event brings together the San Antonio LGBT and Ally community, influential speakers, and award honorees for an enjoyable champagne brunch to celebrate diversity!

Wholistic Festival is a monthly event that has in one place 35+ Exhibitors/Intuitives/Counselors/ Alternative Healers/Numerology/ Astrologers. Everything Healing & Inspirational. The festival will be Sunday, May 20th, 11am – 6pm, at the Hilton Hotel, 611 NW Loop 410.

What Are You Waiting For… Get On With It!

On Wednesay, May 9th, 2012, President Barak Obama stated publicly that he supported Marriage Equality for same-sex marriages.

In an interview with Robin Roberts of ABC, the President said the following, “I have to tell you that over the course of several  years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors, when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed  monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids  together; when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or  sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel  constrained, even now that ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point  I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go  ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get  married,”

Bettie Naylor Memorial Service

On Saturday, May 5th, The Celebration of Life for Bettie Naylor will be held at 3:00 PM in the First United Methodist Church, 1201 Lavaca Street, Austin Texas.

Immediately following the Memorial, per Bettie’s wishes, everyone is invited to celebrate her life at the Family Life Center located one block from the Church. Memorial donations may be made to Family Eldercare, in care of The Bettie Naylor Fund which was established in her name to provide care for aging LGBT seniors. The address is 1701 Rutherford Lane, Austin Texas 78754. May God wrap his arms around each of us and hold us close.

For those of you who are not familiar with Bettie Naylor,  please click here to read a brief overview about her extraordinary life. She was truly an inspirational and untiring advocate and activist for women, youth, LGBT, and all who needed a voice. Bettie Naylor was definitely a champion for human rights and dignity.

The 5th Annual Luminaria is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 5th, from 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. at HemisFair Park in downtown San Antonio.Luminaria is San Antonio’s annual contemporary art celebration featuring artists and performers representing every major discipline in the arts from dance, theater, poetry readings, and music to painting, sculpture, film, and multi-arts projects. Viva Fiesta!

Fiesta 2012 starts Thursday, April 19th and runs through Sunday, April 29th.

Some of the most popular events, particularly with our community, are covered in the San Antonio section.

Starting with LOL on Thursday, come join in our Unofficial Fiesta Kick-Off at Tycoon Flats on N. St. Mary’s St at 6:30pm. DJ Traci will be playing fun dance music all night.

This weekend numerous events are taking place: On Friday, the fabulous WEBB Party is happening at the Lambermont. On Friday & Saturday, the Fiesta Oyster Bake at St Mary’s University is celebrating its 96th year of celebration. And then on Friday, Saturday & Sunday, the Taste of New Orleans at the Sunken Gardens is rolling out its cool jazz and spicy Cajun Food.

The Austin Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (AGLCC) is having its Happy Hour, Thursday, April 19th, 5:30pm – 7:30pm, at Oilcan Harry’s Sports Bar, 211 W. 4th St.

The popular monthly women’s dance, LezzDance, will be happening Saturday, April 21st, from 6 – 10pm, at Rusty’s. Part of the proceeds will benefit the Relay for Life.

Then remember to go to HRC’s Tuesdays Together at Paggi House on April 24th, 6:30 – 8:30pm.

The 2012 Capital City Dance Off Competition  happening at  Rusty’s, 405 E. 7th Street, on Saturday night. The Dance Competition is hosted by 2013 TGRA Candidate Austin Chapter.  There is open dancing from 7pm – 9pm. The the competition kicks-off at 9pm. Registration is at 8:30pm. $25 per couple.

On Tuesday, join the Foodies for their Happiness Hour at Hugos Y Tequila Bar, 300 S. Lamar, at 6pm.

San Antonio

Friday night, The Tobin Hills Art Walk comes to the strip. Visit the Main Ave Gallery next door to Sparky’s Cafe then join everyone on the Patio as to enjoy a complimentary wine tasting of several wines. Live jazz in the gallery, great art to view and fantastic wines to taste.  Friday, April 13th, 6pm – 10pm.

Remember that the Poteet Strawberry Festival, the Bluebonnet Festival in Burnet and the Louisiana Swamp Thing & Crawfish Festival in Buda are going on this weekend. There are many fabulous events happening this week.

San Antonio

Thursday, Our Lady of the Lake University – OLLU Alliance is hosting a movie night. The featured film is And the Band Played On. If you have not seen this monumental movie about the first years of the AIDS epidemic in the United States, make plans to see it Thursday night, 6pm, at the Sueltenfuss Library on campus.  It is very insightful and informative.

Friday, it’s time for the popular monthly First Friday in Southtown. First Friday is an arts & crafts night in Southtown, on S. Alamo Street. You can walk down the street and stop into the many galleries and booths featuring local, handmade art and craft pieces. You will need cash for most of the art/craft vendors. Parking is free in the neighborhood, but come early to make sure you can find a spot!

La Villita First Friday Art Walk is a fabulous addition to First Friday. The shops and galleries are open for everyone to visit. Take time to visit the unique places to browse and shop.

ArtErotica is happening on Saturday, 8:30pm – 12:30am, at Old Home Depot at 7211 North IH‐35.   For over 20 years, ArtErotica has been one of the most unique and scintillating art events in Austin. Hosted by the Octopus Club, ArtErotica has it all; painted art, sculpture, fabrication, kitsch. It has been dubbed “Austin’s Sexiest Art Show”. Come find something to tickle your fancy, including erotic desserts and specialty drinks.

The Octopus Club is a grassroots, volunteer fundraising arm of AIDS Services of Austin dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the Paul Kirby Emergency Fund through annual events and parties. The Paul Kirby Emergency Fund provides emergency financial assistance to those living with HIV and AIDS in Central Texas. These funds are distributed to individuals for basic living needs through AIDS Services of Austin on a case-by-case basis.

The 14th Annual Mighty Texas Dog Walk is taking place Saturday morning at 9am. It’s a three mile stroll around Auditorium Shores. The goal is to bring the Guinness Worlds Record for Largest Dog Walk back to Texas! Current record: 17,427 dogs. Dog Walk Participation: $30/dog day of event. $25/dog pre-registration. After Walk Celebration at Waterloo Park is FREE and open to the public!

This week, the spotlight is on several worthy community support events and efforts happening in San Antonio.

Friday, at the Saint, the 3rd Annual Easter Basket Auction is taking place at 8pm. This fun event is hosted by Mr. TGRA 2012, Rodd Smunk. There will be Live and Silent Auctions, Entertainers from all over,  and lots of fun! All proceeds will go to MCC Food Bank, San Antonio AIDS Foundation and We Are Alive.

Sunday, April 1st, at the Silver Dollar on N. Main, beginning at 9pm, the First Annual 2nd Chance Halloween Ball will be happening! This is NOT an APRIL FOOLS JOKE! Everyone come dressed in your favorite unique costumes! There will be a costume contest, silent auction, and performers and dancers. All proceeds will go to the TGRA charities: MCC Food Bank, SAAF and We Are Alive.

A Special Announcement. On Tuesday, April 3rd, a new support group is forming, GOAL ~ Healing Group Forming for Lesbian Widows.

Becoming a widow is not easy; however, if the partner you lost is also a woman, it becomes more difficult. GOAL (Going On After Loss) has as its aim a venue where these difficulties can be addressed and resolved. Concerns will include those that are emotional, legal and practical. We can provide each other a supportive, safe place, and answers to questions. Occasional guest speakers will help address areas of uncertainty. At a time when being alone can be painful, you can have others around you who will know what you’re facing. Join Us at the Candlelight Coffeehouse & Wine Bar, 3011 N. St. Mary’s, Tuesday, April 3rd at 7 PM.

This week in Austin

Saturday Night, LezzDance at Rusty’s, 405 E. 7th Street. This is the only monthly all women’s dance in Austin. DJ Katie will be playing everyone’s favorite music. $5 at the door. Part of the proceeds will go to AIDS Services of Austin (ASA).

Monday Night, join the Austin Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce for its Toastmasters Group. They will meet at Rusty’s at 6pm. Learn how to master the art of speech, build your confidence and achieve greater Success in your life.

Tuesday night, join HRC for their popular monthly social, Tuesdays Together. This month they are gathering at the Live Oak Pharmacy, 1611 W. 5th St, begnning at 6:30pm. Great opportunity to find out what HRC is doing locally and nationally.

In San Antonio

Thursday night, Our Lady of the Lake University’s Alliance will be showing the movie, Paragraph 175, on Thursday, March 22nd, at 6pm.  The film will be shown at the Sueltenfuss Library, on the OLLU campus, 411 S.W. 24th Street. Rupert Everett narrates this documentary about the Nazi persecution of homosexuals during World War II. “Paragraph 175″ refers to the old German penal code concerning homosexuality, which was used to justify the prosecution of gay men during the war. Over 100,000 were arrested and between 10,000 and 15,000 were sent to concentration camps.   Guest speaker, Professor Jonathan Lee, from San Antonio College  will talk about the LGBT community during the Holocaust.

Thursday night, San Antonio LGBT Chamber of Commerce is having their Annual Membership Meeting at Piatti’s Ristorante in the Quarry, 255 E. Basse Rd, 6pm. Come participate and make your vote count.

This weekend, the Alamo City Men’s Chorale will be performing their Spring Concert on Saturday and Sunday at the First Unitarian Church, 7150 W IH-10. Saturday’s concert begins at 8pm and Sunday’s is at 4pm. The performance will feature the premier work commissioned in honor of ACMC 25th Anniversary, REQUIEM FOR EAGLES. ACMC will pay special tribute to soldiers from the San Antonio area that have lost their lives in the Iraq war.

Thursday, March 15th, is LOL. We will be gathering at Broadway 5050 at the Colonnades (IH-10 & Wurzbach). There will be special drink prices for those wearing LOL name tags! Plus, it’s a lesbian dream… a big movie screen with sports playing while you dance to your favorite tunes! Fun night!

Friday night, C&W Dancing at the Silver Dollar from 8 – 10pm.

Saturday is St. Patrick’s Day! There are several fun events happening that evening. Including the fundraiser for the San Antonio Pride Community Center at the Saint from 6 – 9pm and the fundraiser by the Diablos Flag Football Team at Sparky’s Pub beginning at 9:30pm. Supporting good causes and having lots of fun!

SXSW will be continuing through the weekend. Cutting edge performances and displays of music, films and technology. SXSW ends March 18th.

OUTLander 2012 Spring Festival goes through March 17th. Lots of great music and performances at Oil Can Harry’s.

The Star of Texas Fair & Rodeo will continue through March 24th. Lots of top name entertainers, rodeo events, and exhibits. Fun things for the whole family to see and do.
